"Come" Cue

The "Come" cue can save your dog's life if they ever get loose. Make sure it is something they absolutely LOVE to do! Never call your dog to you and do something they don't like. It will ruin your recall. Go get them in those situations.

THe hand signal for "Come" is to bring your hand from out in front of you to your chest in a sweeping motion.

1.

Let your dog wander to the end of the leash and get interested in something else. If they won't move away from you, toss a treat.

2.

Say the cue "Come" in a happy tone of voice ONE TIME while directly facing your dog.

3.

Move quickly backwards to encourage your dog to run toward you.

4.

When your dog gets all the way to you, give the reward earned cue and feed the treat from between your knees.

5.

Have a little party, petting and praising your dog like they just won the Super Bowl!

EMERGENCY RECALL: Do not use the "Come" cue off-leash until you would bet $50 they wll do it. Instead, lure them in by shaking a bag of treats. Always give the treat when they come to you.

If you have ruined the "Come" cue by calling your dog for something they hate, use a new cue such as "Here".

Tip: Keep a bag of treats by the door and give one every time you call your dog inside.

Week 3

Week 5

1.

Cue your dog to "Sit" and "Wait". Note: It is not necessary to give a treat for the Sit and Wait, but do praise them for it. They will get their paycheck at the end.

2.

Take several steps away from your dog. If in a safe enclosed area, you may drop the leash. Say the cue "Come" in a happy tone of voice ONE TIME while directly facing your dog.

3.

Move quickly backwards to encourage your dog to run toward you.

4.

When your dog gets all the way to you, give the "Sit" cue. "Yes" and treat.

5.

Have a little party, petting and praising your dog like they just won the Super Bowl!

To really improve  your dog's response to "Come", play ping-pong recall. Each family member takes turns calling and rewarding Fluffy, so s/he is bouncing from person to person like a ping pong ball.
